Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist! Review

In a dystopian future, the Japanese government is cracking down on any perceived immoral activity from using risqué language to distributing lewd materials in the country, to the point where all citizens are forced to wear high-tech devices called Peace Makers (PM) at all times that analyse every spoken word and hand motions for any action that could break the law. A new high school student named Tanukichi Okuma enters the country’s leading elite “public morals school” to reunite with his crush and student council President, Anna Nishikinomiya. However, Tanukichi quickly finds himself entwined with the perverted terrorist “Blue Snow” (“Tundra’s Blue” in some translations) when she kidnaps and forces him to join her organisation, “SOX,” in creating and spreading pornographic material across the city as a form of protest against the regulations.

At first glance I assumed this was going to be the stupidest, most ridiculous, wtf anime I was ever going to see. After completing the 12-episode series in one afternoon, I’ve come to the conclusion of.. W-T-F. It was truly a ridiculous series indeed. But what I didn’t anticipate was how much I was going to enjoy it. Let me just start off with, I give it 8.5/10. Let’s just get to the point of the score right away because, go see it now! Then come back to the review, there will be some spoilers here and I don’t want to ruin it for you guys or you won’t have a real reaction from this if I tell you what happens.

Before going to watch it, do consider the title. Shimoneta: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist! It’s going to have inappropriate content in it, there will be some nudity, and well dirty jokes. If you don’t find dirty jokes funny your not really going to enjoy this anime, this anime like all comedies will only make you laugh if you humor appeals to it.

Let’s move on. Dirty jokes, are my favorite, specially the ones that take you a minute to get because they are hidden behind innocent/clean words. This anime from episode 1 to episode 12 had me on the floor laughing I couldn’t breathe. In fact I spit out my sweet tea on the floor at one point. The perverted terrorist “Blue Snow” aka Kajou Ayame aka my favorite character as well as the heart of this anime. The series centers around Kajou Ayame and Tanukichi Okuma. Kajou is the student council vice president at the prestigious school Okuma worked so hard to get into to reunite himsself with his childhood crush, Anna Nishikinomiya. The only one who payed attention to him during a dark time in his childhood. The series starts off with Okuma’s first day of school in his new school, he is on a train and in an attempt to save another student from being arrested by the Decency Squad in a misunderstanding he gets caught up in a crime involving Blue Snow. Any form of perversion or anything sexual is illegal and considered almost the equivalent to murder. Blue Snow stood on top of the train wearing nothing but a bed sheet and a white pair of panties on her head, shouting inappropriate words as she throws soft pornographic pictures into the crowd. Okuma escapes the decency squad who where now after him, making him a criminal for the incident that occurred on the train. Just barely escaping he makes it to school, where he is looked upon as an outsider. Because everyone at his school is sexually ignorant unlike him. He is dragged to the student council room where he is asked to join. Him having knowledge on what perversion is would help aid them to stop such behaviors at the school, where a terrorist, blue snow, poses as a student. Student council vice president Kajou kidnaps Okuma and takes him to a coffee shop, a safe heaven for her perversions. Where she blackmails him into joining her group “SOX”.

From there begins the adventures of SOX as they recruit more members and continue to spread inappropriate pictures, dirty jokes and educate the students as well as society on sex education.

Characters

Ayame Kajou (華城 綾女 Kajō Ayame)

As I said before Kajou is the heart and soul of the series. Her personality goes very well with the plot and keeps the series going and the watchers attentive. It’s her crazy shenanigans that had me laughing my ass off. From her costume, to her constant way of making a situation dirty no matter how pure, to crazy ideas to get her point across, in defiance of the Japanese moral authorities.

But she’s not all jokes and giggles, her strong willed determination to have a freedom of speech and truly educate her peers on how life works is inspiring. Truly a great leader. Loyal to her followers as her followers are to her.

Even one of the founders of the new world ideas, Anna’s father, Mr. Nishikinomiya himself acknowledged Blue Snow’s brave character. He said “I didn’t know our new society could produce someone with guts anymore”. In episode 11.

Anna Nishikinomiya (アンナ・錦ノ宮 Anna Nishikinomiya)

The student council president, childhood friend/crush of Okuma, best friend of Kajou, as well as the perfect example of the flaws the new society is creating in the future generations. At first she comes across as almost angelic (to Okuma) because of her innocence. Which is soon corrupted by episode 3 when Okuma falls on top of her and kisses her, causing Anna to feel feelings she’s never felt before. Being ignorant in sex as well as love she can’t distinguish feelings of love with feelings of lust for Okuma and makes a 180 degree turn in character.

The drastic character change is what helps make Anna memorable as well as contributes to 85% of the W-T-F moments in the series. Keeping us entertained as well as slightly very creeped out.

Tanukichi Okuma (奥間 狸吉 Okuma Tanukichi)

The protagonist of the story, Anna’s childhood friend and Kajou’s partner in pervy crime. He finds himself constantly torn between keeping the secret of Ayame’s alter-ego as a lewd terrorist and turning her in to the authorities to win Anna’s favour. That changes when he eventually comes to terms that he actually enjoys and even finds SOX activities to spread lewdness back into the world stimulating. Later developing romantic feelings for Kajou despite the fact that he disproves of her habit of saying innuendos constantly.

Otome Saotome (早乙女 乙女 Saotome Otome)

The artistic prodigy who has lost her inspiration and ambitions. But soon regains them later after joining SOX in order to learn how to draw explicit artwork after being educated on the subject by Ayame. Because the PMs she wears detects any lewd movement her hands make, she instead taught herself to draw by holding tools with her mouth to avoid her PM’s sensors. She has an unrequited crush on Anna. She serves as that side character that needs to be there so the anime isn’t all focused on Kajou and Okuma.

Kosuri Onigashira (鬼頭 鼓修理 Onigashira Kosuri)

Little red headed deviant girl on a mission to cause as much lewd trouble as possible. Joining SOX for her own secret agenda and entertainment. Poses as Okuma’s little sister when caught by Anna sleeping in his bed with him. Keeps that identity throughout series. Also.. she’s shaped like a penis.. literally speaking.

Hyouka Fuwa (不破 氷菓 Fuwa Hyōka)

The crazy scientist obsessed with learning the secrets to reproduction. No matter what it takes. From asking pregnant woman outside the hospital to asking Okuma uncomfortable questions on his “man cucumber”. She serves as the nerd and SOX little helper whenever it’s convenient.

MUSIC

The opening theme is funny as hell and gets you pumped to see the anime. Very entertaining, I’ve gained a new favorite theme not for the music but for the visuals of the opening. Although the music was catchy but I’ve heard better but its still good. And the combinations of the catchy song and mostly the visuals, makes this opening one on my favorites list. Top 20 not top 10. The music throughout the series is typical comedic song that changes speeds as the scenes get more intense but it’s not too rave about.

Conclusion

I think anyone who finds lewd things remotely funny should give this anime a try. I truly enjoyed and loved it. I just wish it could have been a little longer, as well as I wish they could have developed Okuma and Kajou’s romantic feelings for each-other a little more. That would have been great. My score is 8.5/10
